Before now poetry has taken notice
Of wars, and what are wars but politics
Transformed from chronic to acute and bloody?

Heads Up:

As many of you have no doubt heard, we lost three soldiers just a few days ago. There was something of a slip up somewhere in the process, and the facts of the incident were released before the official DOD brief (but after the families had heard, thank God). All three were from my platoon, and I was pretty good friends with two of them. It's been a rough week, especially on the tail of losing one from another company. I have a post written that I'm hanging onto until that DOD brief comes out, and I'll post more as I'm able.

Edit: Once again, I've been convinced to post a poem. I hope I never write another like the last two.

Halls of Valhalla

Four days ago, they left
From safely guarded walls
Three taken now by theft

Four days, and yet it seems
Fate made three captive thralls
To laugh within our dreams

Four days, and now they dwell
Within Valhalla's Halls
Maidens, treat our fallen well

Show them not the road to Hell;
Rather gird the path with beams
Hide them deep inside a cleft
And Valkyries- heed their calls

I can't even imagine how hard it is to lose your buddies, TD. Your poem is very beautiful and a sad pleasure to read. Take care and know that as ever, people you don't even know are keeping you in their thoughts and prayers.

    Your poem honors them beautifully.

My Soldiers, I said a prayer mostly like this one at Badgers Forward and say another here for you.

    Dear God,
These three souls, are in your strong embrace, welcomed home to everlasting peace
These three valient fighters did make the ultimate sacrifice so others may live
Three three sons have left behind many who miss them with a longing beyond words
These three Soldiers now overwatch their buddies, guiding and strengthening their instincts
These three Soldiers now serve as guardians over their weeping families and friends
These Three Heroes join the ranks of the heroes arrived ahead of them
who will show them how to work their wings
For now, I don't fight the tears...
For now, I don't resist the sorrow...
For soon enough, the overwhelming gratitude I feel for them will take me to the other side of the pain
And then I will hear the joy of the eagles crying out their return
    To their Father's side
    God Bless These Three
    God Bless their buddies
God Bless the men who fought with them
God Bless the men who gathered them to send them home

I am so sorry for your loss. I understand your soldiers were lost on their way to the CH 46 crash that claimed the lives of seven of our bravest, including one of my son's best friends, Captain Jennifer Harris. They served through three combat tours in Iraq, and he gave her eulogy today.

Please accept the condolences of a heartbroken Marine mom.

    TD,

You and yours are in our prayers and thoughts. Losing someone close is never easy, but know that their service (and yours) is greatly appreciated by a huge number of people in this country, what used to be called the Silent Majority.

Take care. Be safe. SUCCEED in your mission!!

  14. Oh. How horribly sad. I feel for their families. I feel for you as their friend. I pray that they aren't dying in vain, and I know in my heart they aren't. Please know that there are a number of us here that are praying very hard for all of you. We count our blessings every morning when we get up that we have you doing what we can't. You have the love of my family and our respect as well. As do the giving men who gave all to protect us from all that is evil. Maybe one day I will get to shake your hand and offer my thanks in person. In the mean time, can you offer my best from my family in Nevada to the loved ones that have just lost? It probably doesn't seem like much. In the whole scheme of things, it probably isn't. As a human and an American it is what I have to give. Please tell them that. They have our love and our prayers. Our respect, and our gratitude. As do you. Thank you from a family in Nevada who knows what is at stake, and knows very well who is willing to pay the price.

Father of compassion, Who dwells on high, in His powerful compassion may He recall with compassion the devout, the upright, and the perfect ones; the holy congregation who gave their lives for the Sanctification of the Name, who were beloved and pleasant in their lifetimes and in their death were not parted from Him Who is the Life of the Worlds: They were quicker than eagles and stronger than lions to do the will of their Creator and the desire of their Rock. May He Who judges in Truth remember them for good with the other righteous of the world. May He Whose ways are perfect before our eyes exact retribution for the blood of His servants.
    (Jewish memorial prayer)

  18. TD-
A grateful nation honors your fallen comrades. The price of freedom remains high and this great country continues to meet that obligation. May our brave fellow Americans rest in peace and may their families know that we will never forget their sacrafice.

  20. In the Nam they used to say "Buck up, it don't mean nothing" How wrong could they be, it meant everything, a life had ended, a son was lost, but nobody cared. Well let me tell you that this old soldier cares, we feel your pain, we know you loss, we love you and we will never forget.....

May God Bless you and keep you.

I sit here too old to go anymore but my son-in-law is in the sandbox, and my son is in the pipeline to go. How helpless it feels to just sit.

A few weeks ago the Blackhawk that my son-in-law was riding on was treated to a missle shot. Fortunately the crew saw the heat seeker and avoided it.

Know that we are all on the same team.
